Top 6 Laptops to Buy This Year
Acer Swift 3
CPU: up to Intel Core i7-8565U
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce MX150, Intel HD Graphics 620 or AMD Radeon Vega 8
RAM: 4GB – 8GB
Screen: 14-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) ComfyView IPS – 15.6″ Full HD (1920 x 1080)
Storage: 128GB – 1 TB HDD, 16 GB Intel Optane Memory
A rather plain-looking Acer Swift 3 may not get much attention for its exterior, but it packs a powerful list of components along with a great price tag that ties everything together nicely. Also, do not be mistaken with the simplicity of its outer shell as it is all-aluminum.
Coming towards its performance, this inexpensive, affordable, and lightweight Acer laptop proved to be an upgrade in terms of CPU, GPU, and battery from its previous model.
Speaking about gaming, the Swift 3 doesn’t do too bad with a light weight game or with running Google Chrome for that matter. As for playing videos and other multimedia content, the 8GB of RAM handles that pretty well without being glitchy or hanging software right after a slow launch.
For the price, you are receiving a decent performing laptop with a backlit keyboard and a trackpad that is large enough for easy use. Safe to say, Acer Swift 3 is one of the best budget laptops you can find.
CPU: 9th-generation Intel Core i7 – i9
Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5300M – Radeon Pro 5500M
RAM: 16GB – 64GB
Screen: 16-inch Retina display with True Tone
Storage: 512GB – 8TB SSD
On the pricier end, this machine is sleek, thin, light, and a complete powerhouse for heavy-duty work. This 16-inch Macbook Pro is by far the best laptop for all content creators, designers, and creative heads out there looking to find their go-to machine. It also comes with amazingly loudspeakers and a better, rather improved keyboard along with it.
Apple didn’t budge much over its standard sleekness by keeping the slimness to an unbelievable 0.64 inches, making it slightly more than the 15-inch Macbook Pro’s 0.61 inches.
What is best, is that the 16-inch beast can be configured up to 64GB of RAM and to a massive 8TB of SSD storage. Furthermore, with 7nm AMD Radeon Pro 5000M series graphics cards residing within the Macbook Pro and with battery life boosted with a 100-watt-hour-battery, this laptop will improve anyone’s productivity, at any place and at any time.
The only downer would be its limited four Thunderbolt 3 ports. So, if you require a workstation that can bear your heavy work without causing any heating, slowing down, or basically frying up the internals – then the 16-inch Macbook Pro is highly recommended. Not to mention with the new thermal design incorporated within this laptop, you will be spared from the noise when the fans kick-in keeping it cool while you busily carry on with your work.
HP Envy x360 13, 2019
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3300U – AMD Ryzen 7 3700U
Graphics: AMD Radeon Vega 6 – Radeon Vega 10
RAM: 8GB – 16GB
Screen: 13.3″ diagonal FHD IPS (1,920 x 1,080)
Storage: 256 GB – 1TB SSD
This 2-in-1 HP laptop offers great premium build and with AMD’s latest 3000 series APU, this version is definitely an upgrade from its previous version with AMD Ryzen 2000 series chip.
This 2-in-1 portable wears an all-aluminum chassis, which gives it a high-end feel and is sturdy in terms of build quality. The 360 hinge converting it into a tablet works smoothly every time and is definitely engineered to last many many folds.
Coming to the usual concerns, the touch screen is passable and decent for the price point with Gorilla Glass producing some reflections. You are also receiving a USB Type-C socket and a microSD reader. However, do note that the single USB-C port doesn’t support charging. Which can be counted as a downer.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G14
Best gaming laptop of the year.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS – 9 4900HS
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
RAM: Up to 32GB
Screen: 14-inch Non-glare Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS-level panel, 120Hz – 14-inch Non-glare WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS-level panel, 60Hz
Storage: 512GB / 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0
It is one of the best machines out there for heavy gaming, there is still a webcam missing including a Thunderbolt 3 port. Not to mention the fans can get loud. So, if these are a deal-breaker for you, then you can always go for other available options.
Keeping those minor inconveniences aside, there is no denying that this is a beast sporting a lightweight (0.7-inches thick) and ultra-thin design with a 120Hz refresh rate.
The battery life is another factor that made this gaming laptop land in our good graces scoring a 5/5 rating. The big claims of AMD about Ryzen 4000 battery life turned out to be quite accurate considering the many tests conducted by various sources. As for the software, Asus sports 3 in total; Zephyrus G14. ROG Game Visual, Armory Crate, and GameFirst VI software. Each of these performs different functions improving the overall gaming experience. Overall, Zephyrus G14 ROG is one of the best gaming laptops to buy in 2020.
LG Gram 17
CPU: Intel Core i7-1065G7
Graphics: Intel Iris Plus
Screen: 17-inch 1600p (2,560 x 1,600)
Storage: 2 x 512GB SSD
This LG laptop is a lightweight design considering the 17-inches, which gives the impression of the machine to be on the heavier side. So, you get a sleek looking and feeling 17-inch laptop that weighs around 2.98 pounds with a battery that can last more than 14 hours. This makes LG’s Gram 17, the perfect partner for travel and remote workstation.
The unappealing qualities of this laptop would be its below-the-standard CPU performance and speakers that are at the bottom, completely ruining the sound quality. To remedy this, you would need additional speakers or simply use headphones. As for the CPU, LG kept it low to compliment the lightweight cooling solution.
If we speak in numbers, then LG Gram 17’s processor scored a 1,290 on Geekbench 5 Single-Core and 3,274 points in the Geekbench 5 multi-core test. However, this doesn’t remove the fact that with whopping 14-hour battery life, being lightweight, and serving a high-resolution display – we can definitely work around the passable performance of the CPU.
Google Pixelbook Go
CPU: Intel Core m3 – Intel Core i7
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 615
RAM: 8GB – 16GB
Screen: 13.3-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) or 4K LCD touchscreen
Storage: 128GB – 256GB eMMC
We had to add a Chromebook for our audience, and so far Google’s Pixelbook Go is the best money can buy. You are getting a long running battery life, an amazing ‘Hush’ keyboard, and a whopping 1080p webcam. Those are pretty solid specs for a Chromebook. However, the price isn’t the lowest, but you are still getting some decent high-end-like specifications at the price.
As for the software and features, this Chromebook offers nothing new. Neither does it offer a biometric log-in capability, that would have made a huge difference considering the price point. The overall built is solid and light with measuring up to 0.5 inches in thickness; which justifies the easy carrying from one meeting to another as Google claims.
As for the numbers, it scored 3,770 and 6,516 on Geekbench 4 Single-Core and Multi-Core tests respectively. So, given the massive battery time, the state-of-the-art keyboard, and that HD webcam with a decent processor handling light to heavy load – I say, it is a pretty great deal for a Chromebook.
That’s a wrap with our best laptops to buy in 2020! Hopefully, this list made your decision easier and clearer. Happy shopping!
