Acer Swift 3 AMD Ryzen 5 4500U Review – Cheapest, Reliable, and Student-Friendly

This AMD Ryzen 5 powered ultraportable device is a great laptop for students providing them with the two most demanded qualities that are long battery life and portability. Acer Swift 3 ‘aces’ these two domains; providing a lightweight laptop with premium performance, all under a fairly low price. Lucky us, we already had one of these with us so writing about it comes easy – so let’s get into our Acer Swift 3 review. What should be the starting title?

Acer Swift 3 Review – Premium Performance with ‘Slight’ Compromises?

This title seems apt given what we are about to disclose for all you potential buyers out there – keeping it transparent for best-learned buy. So, what does one of the cheapest laptops running on the new AMD Ryzen 4000 series mobile CPU serves us?

Now, right off the bat you are getting the following when you unbox.

  • User guide
  • Warranty card
  • Power cable
  • 65W power brick

Design – Ultrathin, Lightweight, Compact and Metal Body Sleekness

It doesn’t get better than this.

Already excited for this Acer Swift 3 review? This 14-inch laptop with no dedicated GPU isn’t meant for gaming. Just to make this clear in case you are hoping to get some serious heavy gameplay session on this small laptop.

Now, with that disclaimer out of the way and coming to the design in its entirety, you are looking at a sleek and feathery light compact laptop that won’t be felt in the backpack. To back this up, it is 15.95mm thin and weighs a mere 1.2kg.

It has a premium looking magnesium-aluminum chassis with Acer logo in the center giving a neat high-end look. It is, however, a bit of a fingerprint magnet but all is good here.

With the lid open, you get a 14-inch Full HD IPS display with Acer logo at the bottom. The Acer Swift 3 Ryzen packs a nice backlit keyboard and a smooth trackpad. There’s a webcam on the top bezel and a fingerprint scanner below the arrow keys; which is reliable and secure in my experience. As for the speakers themselves, they are decent enough which can provide sound quality that is passable. But if you want good enough sound quality then I would suggest you find external speakers for a more refined audio experience.

Now, you must have noticed that there is a Numpad missing. But given the compactness of the machine, it is understandable that there was no room for it.

Other than all this, the lid is pretty sturdy and not made to be open with just one hand alone which is a blessing. You wouldn’t want hinges that loosen up easily overtime.

Connectivity Ports

Acer Swift 3 Review

On the left side you are getting a dedicated charging port, USB-C port, USB-A port, and an HDMI port as well. On the right you have another USB-A port, LED indicators, a Kensington Lock, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack.

In a Nutshell

Overall, the feel is great and solid with nothing wobbly or loose hinges considering it does bend 180-degrees. However, the keyboard shows a bit of flex – so all you aggressive typers out there – you have been warned. Of course, you cannot expect to receive a feel like that of Macbook Pro 16-inch but considering the low price point, you are still receiving a great premium feel with that metal body.

Acer Swift 3 Ryzen 5 Review
Via Pocket Lint

The laptop lives up to its claim of being super productive as it provides 8GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB SSD with a 60Hz refresh rate display. Yes, I would like to upgrade the RAM given the multi-task I do at work, but if you are a student, you may be alright with 8GB. Moreover, since the memory is soldered onto the board, you cannot expand it.

The downer would be the color inaccuracy and dim display (278-nits) but you can still work around it and it is not that big of an inconvenience given the price, so you can pass.

Let’s Talk About that AMD Ryzen 5 4500U and AMD Radeon Graphics

Unlike most of Ryzen 5 products out there in the market, this Acer Swift 3 includes Ryzen 5 without multithreading. So its a 6-core and 6 threads CPU and is a low powered version. Meaning, you cannot expect it to be as powerful as those higher-end ones including Acer Swift Ryzen 7 4700U.

Running a test on this, we were not disappointed as the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U CPU performance outperformed the 8th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU. In addition, it is faster than high powered AMD CPUs from previous generations. Given the results, this little powerhouse can enable photo editing and light 1080p video editing. Which is quite decent given the mid-ranger AMD is providing.

Coming to the AMD Radeon Graphics, it easily beats Intel’s HD Graphics and is in line with the MX150 and MX230 dGPU. Meaning, you can play light games like Overwatch, Minecraft, and similar comfortably over 1080p at over 60fps. Again, not a gaming laptop, but can manage on low settings.

Other than that, on the whole, considering the price range of the Acer Swift 3 Ryzen, these specs are an upgrade for a cheap laptop. Agree?

Battery Life

You get 6 hours of productivity, nearly 9 hours of Netflix (I know, right?), and 9-10 hours of light work that includes browsing and such. So, the battery life on this little compact Acer Swift 3 Ryzen 5 is above average. If the work gets tough and those processors start doing the heavy work, that one fan that Acer Swift 3 comes with won’t run at full speed and you will get a quiet laptop.

Verdict?

It’s a fantastic compact greatness that provides decent performance under a small price tag making it the cheapest AMD Ryzen laptop with great specs. Overall, this laptop provides a solid build quality with amazing battery life. Unlike the popular belief of AMD Ryzen’s exhausting the batteries out. Yes, it is not a perfect machine, but it did outperform some high-end components as we mentioned above – so this Acer Swift 3 is a winner.

If this Acer Swift 3 review has got you into buying it for yourself then, check out the competitive price this laptop is being offered at Amazon.

So, What Are Your Planning?

If you ask us, you should go for it and you will not be disappointed. If anything, the convenience will make it hard for you to let it go that easily. Ask me, one of us uses this machine as our go-to travel buddy.

AirPods Pro 2 Leak Suggests Price, Release Date & Minor Improvements

If you go back to when the AirPods Pro first launched, the wireless earbuds came with all sorts of substantial upgrades. Those upgrades included a compact design, better battery life, and a new addition of noise cancellation.

Now with AirPods Pro 2, the expectations to amplify the AirPods Pro upgrades further providing a more refined premium product with stellar experience are high. However, it will take some time before the product hit the shelves and online store.

Tipster Shares About AirPods Pro 2 Launch Timeline – Says We Could See Them Earliest in Q4, 2021

LeaksApplePro gave us some insight regarding AirPods Pro 2 launch that isn’t going to be anytime soon; the best-expected launch timeline is the fourth quarter of 2021. He also stated that there is a possibility of seeing them as late as Q1, 2022. So, in case you were planning on getting the AirPods Pro 2 in hopes of getting your hands on the latest one, we would highly suggest purchasing the AirPod Pro that is available at a great discount.

AirPods Pro 2 Expected to Be Priced The Same as the AirPods Pro – $249

LeaksApplePro also mentioned that the price of Apple AirPods Pro 2 is expected to be the same as AirPods Pro( $249 ), but with additional improvements. Those improvements, for example, he mentions is the battery life that will be improved. Now, exactly how much is what was not included in the leak. If we could take a guess given their size, it could be improved by at least 30 minutes to an hour. However, that is still a guess but would be a great battery life upgrade.

LeaksApplePro expects noise cancellation to be incorporated within the AirPods Pro 2. But if you are looking for a premium set of noise cancellation feature in your earbuds, then we recommend waiting for the AirPods Studio. Better yet, if you can, then buy high-quality over-the-head wireless headphones that are front runners of this domain.

So far, according to the tipster, AirPods Pro 2 will not arrive with mammoth upgrades compared to its predecessors. This entails, that if Apple continues to sell the first-generation AirPods Pro, then given their pricing strategy, the price tag on these will reduce significantly giving us excellent value for money.

Having said all that, the above information should be taken with a pinch of salt as it is not official news. We’ll keep you updated with more AirPods Pro 2 news as it comes; so stay tuned.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 Review – AMD Ryzen Powered Budget Goodness

Do we have a 2-in-1 yet another mediocre machine or we finally have clamshell goodness and that too under a budget? In this Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 review, we’ll be finding out what the deal is about and how much value are we getting out of the Lenovo’s touchscreen laptop-cum-tablet.

Overview – Ryzen Powered, still good enough?

With AMD’s Ryzen 4000 chips on the market and that too cheaper than intel counterparts, you best believe this is reality. Laptops powered by this processor are bound for high-level performance and Lenovo’s IdeaPad 5 14 isn’t any different running on 6-core Ryzen 5 4500U raising everyone’s expectations. On top of this, you are receiving 16GB of RAM under $600 which is a steal for these high-end specs.

Right off the bat, its pros and cons are:

Pros

  • Excellent value for little money
  • Two USB Type-A ports
  • Comfortable keyboard and touchpad
  • Touch-screen
  • Pen support
  • Webcam privacy shutter included
  • Elevated computer performance

Cons

  • Basic and boring design
  • Dim 250-nit display

Design – ‘It’s so Plastic, it’s still Fantastic’

Yes, Lenovo Flex 5 is an all-plastic laptop from top to the bottom. You must have expected some compromises at that price and this is where it is mediocre. You cannot expect Lenovo Flex 5 14 to sport an aluminum body construction as a MacBook Pro now can you.

Moving on, its 360-degree hinge allows the Lenovo Flex 5 to fold past 180 and easily be propped as a tent or fold it completely to turn it into a tablet. Not a problem there as the hinge is sturdy and promising for the many future folds ahead.

The convertible also sports a bulkier chassis measuring 0.82 by 1.27 by 8.6 inches and weighing around 3.3 pounds. Now by the standards of ultraportable, this chunky yet excellent performing convertible doesn’t make it.

However, you have options for thinner and lighter 2-in-1 designs but for double the price of Lenovo Flex 5’s. So, keeping that in mind, you are striking a great deal and saving a lot. I am sure a little more thickness than what the trend dictates with superior computing power won’t make much of a difference now, won’t it?

On the other hand, the thickness that some might find hard to pass, you are getting more connectivity ports that in a high-end machine out there in the market for a hefty price tag. You are getting two USB-A 3.1 ports, a USB-C 3.1 port, an HDMI 1.4 port, and, last but not least, a 4-in-1 SD card reader. Also, the power button is mounted on the right side.

If you are into industrial looks and aesthetics than the dark grey Lenovo Flex 5 14 with a hint of chrome is quite great looking.

On the downer, Thunderbolt 3 is missing and wireless connectivity is still limited to WiFi 5. These negatives still do not create a big inconvenience for the price and the legacy ports you are receiving.

Performance Mark – Let’s Talk Numbers

We already talked about power-packed AMD’s Ryzen 5 chips so the performance marker should be great for Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14. With Ryzen 5 4500U that has six cores and six threads, this budget laptop did not disappoint. Do keep in mind that similar budget laptops like the Acer Swift 3 run on 8-core Ryzen 7 4700U CPU and still get good competition from a lower thread processor of Lenovo Flex 5.

Check out the benchmarks test scores

Geekbench 5 benchmark

Single-core test: 1,096

Multi-core test: 4,543

This IdeaPad Flex 5 is one fast laptop at such an economical price considering its more expensive counterparts.

Speaking about the graphics card, in a convertible laptop, is often used by media content creators that largely includes graphic designers. Flex 5 takes the lead here as well with its AMD Radeon Graphics integrated. Gamers can rejoice as well but in a lower resolution setting. Hey, it’s not specifically made for gaming, so you have to go easy on your gaming spree as this machine won’t hold well.

This brings us to our display section of this Lenovo Flex 5 review.

Screen – Lackluster and a Lesser Match for the Performance

With all the positives a visible and unfortunate negative would be the screen size and a dim backlight rated for 250-nits of brightness only. So unless you are in a dark room the Lenovo Flex 5 will be alright but in daylight-lit rooms, you will have to turn up the brightness to the max to be able to function. Moreover, because of its glossy screen, you will encounter glare problems in lit rooms.

lenovo flex 5 Screen

As for the touchscreen feature, the panel is a Full HD IPS touch screen supporting inputs from Lenovo Digital Pen. The pen further sports two customizable buttons with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity making it a large stylus pen and great for long sketching sessions, unlike the integrated pens that are smaller in size and less comfortable.

Mounted above the Flex 5’s screen is an HD webcam that shoots in 720p. The image quality is noisy and overall poor compared to the current standards. But then again, the webcams of many great machines perform on a similar standard. Another great factor that Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 provides is the built-in physical privacy shutter when you are not using it. You may not get facial recognition just yet in Lenovo Flex 5, but you have a keyboard-mounted fingerprint reader for additional security.

Others – Keyboard, Audio, and Touchpad

Lenovo Flex 5 Review
Via Windows Central

The backlit keyboard performs excellently and is rather comfortable with sturdy keys. Of course, you cannot expect to land a Magic Keyboard like the one MacBook Pro 16-inch sports, but this keyboard is still of good quality. So far so good with our Lenovo Flex 5 review?

Next up, the touchpad is great as well and offers smooth and precise touches. It supports Microsoft’s Precision Touchpad drivers, so you get the same Windows 10 multi-touch gestures with no lagging.

Battery Life – ‘Flexes’ for Longer Hours

With Ryzen 5 chip running on Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14, anyone would assume instant drainage when doing heavy work and that too on full-brightness during the day. However, that is not the case with the Lenovo Flex 5 battery life and this high-end budget machine continued to flex for 13 hours straight running on a video test on a loop with 70 percent brightness without any internet connectivity. This isn’t as bad as one would assume and the battery life is pretty impressive.

So, for now, this is a fantastic deal at the price below $600 only. Check out the best deal on this Lenovo Flex 5 14 2-in-1 laptop below!

Buy this powerful machine under budget and enjoy great computing with minor compromises

Our Verdict- Should You Buy or Not?

It entirely depends on your budget. If you can afford high-end 2-in-1 notebooks then go for them. Otherwise, you have a decent laptop which is inexpensive and is not playing when it says it provides premium-level performance. A 15.6-inch touchscreen display, a nice backlit comfortable keyboard, storage expansion feature, and outstanding battery life for you to carry out your work without any interruptions.

Yes, the display isn’t as bright as we would like and the pen storage on the side looks lazy and inconvenient but under $600? I say a big YES; the value you are getting under this price tag is remarkable in this market.

Hopefully, this Lenovo Flex 5 Review gave you the necessary insight to come to a solid decision. Psst! But it.
